What is the Special Consultative Status?

\r\n

The ECOSOC grants Special Consultative Status to NGOs whose programs are of direct relevance to the aims and purpose of the United Nations.

\r\n

By having consultative status, HOFNA could:

\r\n
    \r\n
  • Provide expert analysis on issues directly from its experience in the field;
  • \r\n
  • Serve as an early warning agent;
  • \r\n
  • Help monitor and implement international agreements;
  • \r\n
  • Help raise public awareness of relevant issues;
  • \r\n
  • Play a major role in advancing United Nations goals and objectives;
  • \r\n
  • Contribute with essential information at organization events;
  • \r\n
  • Attend international conferences and events;
  • \r\n
  • Make written and oral statements at these events;
  • \r\n
  • Organize side events;
  • \r\n
  • Enter United Nations premises;
  • \r\n
  • Have opportunities to network and lobby.
  • \r\n
\r\n

Consultative Status to the United Nations ECOSOC is the highest status granted by the United Nations to NGOs and granted upon recommendation of the ECOSOC Committee on NGOs, which is comprised of 19 Member States. In 1945, 41 NGOs were granted consultative status by the council; by 1992 more than 700 NGOs had attained consultative status and the number has been steadily increasing ever since with more than 4,000 organizations today.
This year, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations had before it 483 applications and #HOFNA is privileged to be among 223 NGOs which were recommended for consultative status.
